Date: 06-Dec-2011
Time: 19:30 - 22:30

The film program opens with Cineblend, a monthly film event. On this evening an international panel of filmmakers and experts will discuss the role that critical cinema plays in in the Arab world, especially in Syria.

Eddy Appels and Natasja van ’t Westende, the curators of the program ‘Criticial Syrian Cinema: Roots of Revolution?’, will introduce the films that will be shown, after which the discussion will be held. The participants will be:

Ossama Mohammed is a Syrian film director and the main guest of the film program. He studied in Moscow and was inspired by the Russian cinema of Vertov and Eisenstein. Mohammed’s first feature film ‘Stars in Broad Daylight’ is a biting satire about the Ba’ath regime and still banned in Syria. The film established his international reputation and received a host of prizes.

Neil van der Linden is a programmer, curator and writer. His specialty and main interest is the art and culture of the Arabic and Islamic world. Van der Linden will introduce fragments from Egyptian films and explain their connection with recent events there. Adel Salem from Cinema Arabe will contribute and comment on this section.

Charlotte Bank is an independent researcher, writer and curator. Her main focus is the reception of Islamic and Arab art and culture in Western high and popular culture, early Islamic visual art, contemporary artistic and cultural practice in the Arab world and its diaspora, hybridity and interculturality.
