Since the successful festival in December 2009 where we presented 60 performances in 5 Dutch cities, the Dancing on the Edge organization has been busy with a number of projects. These include training, symposiums, research and artistic residencies partly funded by both the European Commission and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

Fringe Program

An extensive fringe program, on which various partner organisations in each city have collaborated, includes meetings and after-performance talks with the makers, introductions, debates, professional meetings and network meetings. This provides depth, so that more insight can be gained into the backgrounds of the performances, as well as contact with the performers. For instance, some theatres provide the opportunity of dining with the artists before the performance or listening to an inspiring introduction while eating dinner.

Music
Besides dance and theatre, there is also music. Singer Rima Khcheich (Lebanon) will give some wonderful concerts, as well as giving a masterclass to music students from the World Music and Dance Centre in Rotterdam.
In Amsterdam and Utrecht, there will be Dance on the Edge club nights. In Amsterdam, on Friday 4 December, DJ mps PILOT will be playing in Frascati 3 from 23:00. At the final party in Utrecht, organised in collaboration with Kosmopolis Utrecht, two well-known female DJs with roots in Iran and Morocco, DJ Ishtar and DJ Nadia, will be playing after the last performance in RASA from 22:00. Free entrance

Films
In the film program, the films Knowledge is the Beginning (2006) by Paul Smaczny and Carried by the Wind (2008) by Adam Sebires show how music can play the role of mediator in the Middle East. There is also a program of dance films and documentaries about dance in the Middle East. They will be shown in the theatres themselves as well as in cinemas.
