Äataba (the threshold, in Arabic), examines the contradictions of the individual and the society in Moroccan society. The duality of life there – what behavior is expected and what actually happens, is shown by revealing the teeming sensuality which breaks loose in the night clubs and bars and discos – hidden from view but not illegal. According to the choreographer: ‘On the streets the exhibition of professional status or religion prevails, and the bodies cease being themselves. In the basements, though, they do not hide any more: they dare, they live, they enjoy. This freedom, even the perfume of it, is what we seek in such hidden places’. As for the structure and movement material of the piece Izzediou explains: ‘We, who have studied in France, in Europe, and elsewhere, do not want to appear as Moroccans imitating Western prototypes, but neither do we want to present traditional dances in an Oriental exoticism that does not take into account our research abroad. It is thus necessary to create new work that combines our own gestures, our own steps, and our heritage with our understanding of the dance of today.’
