Book Presentation An Orchestra Beyond Borders

Wednesday December 2 / 18:00 / Amsterdam – Frascati 3 / Free entrance

In cooperation with the American Book Center, a presentation of the recently published book An Orchestra Beyond Borders: Voices of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra – written by Elena Cheah- will take place in Frascati 3.

Bringing together young musicians from Palestine, Israel and other countries of the Middle East, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is both one of the most acclaimed youth orchestras in the world and a powerful ray of hope in a war-torn region. Founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said in 1999, it aims to promote Arab-Israeli understanding through music.
In her book, author Elena Cheah – who plays in the orchestra and is assistant to Daniel Barenboim – explores the orchestra’s journey, through the remarkable stories of its members. During the presentation she will
read from her book, answer questions from the public and sign copies. A documentary about the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Knowledge is the Beginning, will also be shown at the festival film program.
