Since the successful festival in December 2009 where we presented 60 performances in 5 Dutch cities, the Dancing on the Edge organization has been busy with a number of projects. These include training, symposiums, research and artistic residencies partly funded by both the European Commission and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

The next festival is planned for December 2011. A call for entries will be publicized in the fall, but interested artists can contact us about their pieces.

Q&A Sessions & Artist Talks

In addition to the introductions and after-performance discussions in every city, a number of more in-depth Artist Talks will be held, where performers will speak about their work and a specific theme of the evening.

From Oum Khaltoum to Jazz: Crossovers in Music

A talk with Rima Khcheich (Lebanon) and Tony Overwater (the Netherlands) about their collaboration of many years’ standing. Since 1998, they have been working together on creating a unique new style in Arabic musical culture: a wonderful fusion between traditional and modern Arabic songs and contemporary Western arrangements.

State of the Contemporary Performing Arts in Egypt

Two leading artists from Egypt – choreographer and dancer Karima Mansour and theatre artist and cultural entrepreneur Ahamd el Attar – discuss their performances and the state of the art in their home country.

Mine, Ours and Theirs: Creating Dance between Shifting Identities

Intercultural dance specialist Nicolas Rowe will talk with choreographers and dance festival directors Tauofik Izzediou (Morocco) and Omar Rajeh (Lebanon). Both have many years’ experience in the West, but are taking that baggage in search of a new dance idiom, which is also based on the dance traditions they grew up with. They are also both trying to raise the levels of the dance scene in their own countries and region.

Cultural Exchange with Iran: Connecting Stories?

A discussion about cultural exchange and the performing arts in Iran. The productions Cloud and Man is Man are international co-productions, in which Iranian and Dutch makers collaborate. The artists involved on the Iranian side -Yaser Khaseb and Reza Gouran – are also participating in the Connecting Stories program; a network of selected theater makers from Iran, the Netherlands and North America.
